Carpet Weaving Techniques - Decoded

Centuries ago, shepherds started knotting wool into heavy woven cloth to protect themselves from the harsh weather. The early artisans demonstrated amazing skill in weaving, dyeing and producing these rugs. Where the first rugs were made is not clear but established trade routes soon took the skill across the seas to China. In Persian, now Iran, rugs began to be woven 2500 years ago by nomadic tribes again as protection from the cold winters. When Islam found its way into Europe, it took with it the tradition of owning a prayer rug and European artisans were introduced to the fine art of rug making. Commercial carpet making had its roots in England, whereas, an American, Erastus B. Bigelow invented the power loom to manufacture Wilton Carpets in 1848.

Today, rug making is a fine art involving a high level of skill and craftsmanship.
